Cruise Travel Insurance
If you’re forced to cancel your cruise, how much of that prepaid trip cost could you get back?
There are often cancellation penalties tied to travel purchases, especially cruise trips, and you could get a portion of your trip costs back or none at all. Those penalties tend to get more severe as the departure date gets closer. This is where Trip Cancellation coverage can help you.
Do I need a special cruise insurance plan?
You don’t need a travel insurance plan that’s specifically for cruises. Any good travel insurance plan with good medical benefits can work well for a cruise.
Here are the types of coverage you’ll likely want to have in a cruise travel insurance plan
Trip cancellation insurance
This reimburses you 100% for the pre-paid and non-refundable deposits you lose if you have to cancel for a reason covered by the policy.
Trip interruption coverage
This will reimburse you a percentage of the unused trip costs, such as 100%, 150% or 200%, if your trip is cut short because of illness, injury, death or any other covered reasons.
Emergency medical expenses
This pays for medical expenses associated with injuries and illness you get while on the cruise trip. Travel insurance plans offer from $50, 000 to $500,000 in travel medical insurance. You will need to decide the number that is right for you and sufficient for your cruise. If you’re a senior, good travel medical coverage is crucial. U.S. medical insurance plans generally have very limited or no coverage outside the home country. And Medicare doesn’t cover medical care outside the U.S., with only a few exceptions. Medical benefits of a travel insurance policy can help cover unforeseen accidents and illnesses—like treating a broken leg or needing antibiotics for a sudden illness and in more extreme circumstances, hospitalization.
Our recommended travel insurance plans can cover your pre-existing conditions. You do this by getting a “pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver,” but this needs to be added within 14 to 21 days, depending on the company, after making your initial cruise deposit.
Emergency medical evacuation coverage
All our recommended trip cancellation plans cover the costs to get you to the nearest adequate medical facility or even back home if it’s medically required.
Cancel for any reason coverage
Canceling for reasons that are not listed in the policy isn’t covered, unless you have already purchased cancel for any reason coverage (CFAR). This typically reimburses you typically 75% of trip costs and lets you cancel the trip for any reason.
Additional coverage
Such as lost/damaged or delayed baggage coverage.
